Position Description

Times New The Solutions Architect reports to the Director, Solutions Architecture and Development, and is responsible for designing, programming, testing, and supporting deployment of customer software and customized commercial software. This individual will work as part of a team of solution/system architects and analysts, and will be involved in a variety of Web, Web services, client-server, and utility programming efforts. Depending on the scope of a project, the Solutions Architect may work under the guidance of a Senior Solutions Architect or Project Manager. II. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES The Solutions Architect shall: 1. Meet with business sponsors to develop and collect business requirements. 2. Analyze and document requirements using standard modeling techniques (workflow/process, data, use cases, etc.) and following established requirements document formats. 3. Track a project's requirements through draft, baseline, test, and change control stages. Identify and track issues, problem reports, test results/failures, and requirements changes. 4. Translate requirements into system designs. Designs may encompass database, program code, workflow, Web sites, or integration, customization and configuration of commercial products such as Microsoft SharePoint, Rights Management and Office Communication Server, MetaStorm eWork (workflow), Active Directory, etc. 5. Write programs (within Microsoft .NET or other open standard frameworks), database scripts (T-SQL), Web page designs (XML/XSLT, HTML/CSS, etc.), and reports (SQL Reporting Services) using Visual Studio .NET 2008, SQL Server 2005/2008, Access, and other Microsoft-centric development tools. 6. Use source code version control software (Team System 2008 Source Control) and apply procedures to ensure code is protected from uncontrolled or unauthorized changes. 7. Build and execute detailed test plans, prepare test cases/scenarios, build test data sets, and perform or coordinate performance of unit and system tests. Document test results, issues, errors, etc. using designated tracking tools (using Team System 2008). Track problems through to resolution. 8. Deliver prototypes to project sponsors throughout the development cycle, assist with evaluation and test by end-user communities, and manage change requests. 9. Work with other disciplines within IT to ensure that applications will perform as required and behave according to network standards or constraints specified by the Network Manager, CTO, or other authority. 10. Provide technical support for cyclical processes that are already in place. This may include the importing of data into 'consumer' systems, overseeing the configuration of vendor applications, and training or refreshing staff on processes. 11. May provide assistance with 2nd level technical support, limited end-user support, and preparation of training materials. 12. Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Director, Solutions Architecture and Development, CIO, CTO, or other management III. JOB REQUIREMENTS 1. Bachelor's degree (MIS, Computer Science, or related discipline preferred, but not required). 2. Minimum 2 years experience in a software development position involving design, coding, database access processes, (ADO.NET, LINQ, SQL SPROCs, etc.), and testing. Responsibility as technical lead on small projects will be considered a plus. 3. Experience creating detailed business requirement and functional specifications, either independently or under the guidance of a Requirements Analyst (depending on scope). 4. Exceptional analytical skills and ability to translate concepts to code. 5. Superior oral and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate with both technical development staff and internal customers comprised of staff, associates, and partners. 6. Must have a service-oriented approach to development. Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to system documentation.. 7. Ability to accept input from and provide guidance to design team members and project sponsors. Must be able to work effectively with product manufacturers' technical support staffs. 8. Hands-on experience using Visual Studio Team System Source Control or other version control software, detailed knowledge of Visual Studio, and demonstrated skill with Visual Basic and/or C# and IIS7. Should have a solid understanding of SQL Server from a developer's perspective. 9. Some development experience with mobile and cloud technologies will be a definite plus. 10. Experience both with custom applications and the implementation of off-the-shelf software products. 11. Must be self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to work independently at times or in teams, as needed to meet project objectives.
